Barrister Turin Afroz, a former prosecutor at the much-debated war crimes tribunal in Bangladesh, was arrested by police on Monday night from her residence in Uttara, Dhaka.
Police detained the controversial legal figure around 10 PM from her home in Sector 3, Road 11 of Uttara, in connection with a murder case linked to the recent Students Against Discrimination Movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner of Media and Public Relations, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, confirmed the arrest to the Liberty News, stating that several cases, including in Nilphamari and Uttara West Police Station, have been filed against her.
Barrister Afroz had previously drawn widespread criticism during the tenure of the ruling Awami League for allegedly evicting her own mother from the family home, an incident that sparked outrage on social media and in political circles.
Once a key figure in the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), she was later removed amid numerous allegations concerning her conduct and role in the tribunal’s operations.
Liberty News’ crime correspondent states that in 2018, Afroz had also sought a political role, vying for an Awami League nomination to contest in the national parliamentary elections.
