A hearing and speech-impaired woman was brutally murdered by her neighbors—a husband and wife—in Gazipur’s Tongi area to finance their online gambling addiction, police say.

The victim, Rabeya Sabrina Likhan, 33, was a computer operator at an institution under the Ministry of Social Welfare. According to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), the murder took place in the early hours of May 19 in the Arichpur area of Tongi East.

The accused, Saiful Islam (28), a garment worker, and his wife Sadia Akter (19), allegedly entered Rabeya’s home while she was cooking with the door left open. They tied her hands, feet, and mouth before killing her and fleeing with cash and valuables. Ironically, Sadia was the first to “discover” the incident and alert the landlord after neighbors noticed a smell of burning food.

Following a murder case filed by the victim’s mother, the investigation was transferred to PBI Gazipur, which used digital tracking to apprehend the couple on May 25 from the Borobari area.

Sub-Inspector Bishwajit Biswas, the investigating officer, said Saiful had been addicted to online gambling and had frequent arguments with his wife over unpaid rent. Learning that Rabeya was about to receive a bonus, they devised a plan to rob and kill her.

Both suspects confessed to the crime in court.

Commenting on the case, PBI Gazipur Unit Chief Superintendent of Police Md. Abul Kalam Azad said, “Killing a person with disabilities in such a cold-blooded manner is a heinous act. The perpetrators must face exemplary punishment to prevent such crimes in the future.”
