The Dhaka Metropolitan Special Judge Court has imposed a travel ban on former Member of Parliament, Nixon Chowdhury, and his wife Tarin Hossain, amid ongoing corruption investigations.
On Monday, Dhaka’s Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib issued the order after the investigation officer of the case, Assistant Director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Muhammad Shihab Salam, filed a plea requesting a travel ban on the couple.
According to the petition, investigations into Nixon Chowdhury and Tarin Hossain revealed that they were attempting to leave the country secretly. The ACC expressed concerns that their departure could severely disrupt the ongoing inquiry.
Earlier this year, on January 9, the ACC filed two separate cases against Nixon Chowdhury and Tarin Hossain. They are accused of illicitly accumulating nearly 1.9 billion Bangladeshi Taka and engaging in suspicious transactions totaling over 316 billion Taka in their bank accounts. The cases have sparked intense scrutiny regarding their alleged involvement in corruption.
Liberty News’ court correspondent satates that the court’s decision to impose the travel restriction is part of efforts to ensure the integrity of the investigation.
