The Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) will hold discussion with stakeholders to review the much-talked-about tariff imposed from 15 October sparking widespread protests from business people and trade associations.

The discussion will be held within 10 to 15 days to reach a logical and acceptable decision, said Chattogram Port Users’ Forum Convener Amir Humyun Mahmud Chowdhury.

The development came after the forum issued a seven-day ultimatum, warning of shutting the port, from a protest meeting held on 18 October.

The Forum President Chowdhury disclosed the development at a view exchange and discussion meeting organsied to discuss the issues like weigh scale, port tariff and way to make the Chattogram Chamber as accountable- and business-friendly one at City Convention Hall in the city’s Agrabad Access Road on Wednesday afternoon.

Addressing the programme, Chowdhury said following the ultimatum, and work abstentions observed by transport owners and workers, and Customs Agents and Employees Associations, the port chairman managed to withhold the increased tariff for the transports.

“The four-hour work abstention by the C&F Agents and Employees Association was also withdrawn to avoid any disruption in the port then,” he said.

“We again sent letter to the chief adviser who then appointed an agency to talk with us. We had discussion with the port chairman and representative of the agency on Tuesday,” said Chowdhury.

“Following the discussion, the port chairman agreed to hold discussion with the stakeholders within 10-15 days. The meeting will decide which is logical and pragmatic, and that will be expected,” stated Chowdhury.
