A total of 528 students collected nomination forms to vie for various posts in the elections to the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU), after the extended deadline ended on Wednesday.
Confirming the matter this evening, Chief Election Commissioner Prof Monir Uddin said, “Over the four days from 14 to 17 September, a total 1,162 candidates collected nomination papers to contest 232 posts. Of them, 528 students collected forms for 26 CUCSU posts.”
Besides, a total of 634 students collected nomination forms for the posts of 14 halls and one hostel by the final day, he said.
Among the aspirants, 125 submitted forms for the CUCSU polls, while 246 did so for the hall and hostel union elections by Wednesday.
Notably, of the total 28 CUCSU posts, two including the president and treasurer ones are kept reserved for the vice-chancellor and another nominated member, respectively.
Although the preannounced deadline for nomination paper collection and submission expired on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, the Election Commission has extended it by another day.
CUCSU Election Commission Member Secretary Prof AKM Ariful Haque Siddiqui said, “A large number of students were unable to collect nomination forms within the deadline due to examinations and other reasons.
“In order to ensure equal and fair opportunities for all to practise their democratic rights, the deadlines for the nomination form collection and submission have been extended by one more day, until 5pm on 17 and 18 September, respectively,” he added.
After scrutiny, the final list of candidates will be announced at 1pm on 25 September, said sources.
The elections will be held on 12 October, for 26 posts at the CUCSU, and 16 posts in each of the student dormitories.
On Wednesday morning, Chhatra Dal CU unit General Secretary Abdullah Al Noman submitted a written application to the Election Commission, seeking a two-day extension for collecting and submitting nomination forms.
He cited the recent clashes between students and villagers, as well as ongoing examinations across several departments, as reasons for the appeal.
