The Gopalganj district town remains under strict curfew today (Thursday) following violent clashes between Awami League (AL) supporters and law enforcement agencies during a rally by the Nationalist Citizen’s Platform (NCP) on Wednesday.
The unrest left at least four people dead and dozens injured, according to hospital and police sources. In response to escalating violence, the government imposed a curfew in the town and deployed army personnel, RAB, police, and four platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to maintain order.
A press release from the Chief Adviser’s Office confirmed the curfew will continue until 6:00 PM today. Section 144 was also declared across Gopalganj Sadar, restricting public gatherings indefinitely.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as AL activists and members of the banned student wing Chhatra League took to the streets with sticks and stones, clashing with police in several parts of the city.
In a stern response, the government issued a statement calling the violence “utterly indefensible,” and promised to bring the perpetrators to justice. “Preventing young citizens from holding a peaceful rally is a shameful violation of fundamental rights,” the statement read.
Top NCP leaders, including Akhtar Hossain, Hasnat Abdullah, and Sarjis Alam, were evacuated from the town in an armored vehicle under army and police escort. They were later moved to Khulna for safety.
At a press conference in Khulna, NCP convener Nahid Islam accused AL and its affiliates of launching a “militant-style attack” on the peaceful rally.
In protest, the NCP has announced nationwide demonstrations today.
