Meteorologists warn of a possible severe cyclone named ‘Shakti’ forming in the Bay of Bengal between May 24 and 26, with coastal regions of Bangladesh and eastern India facing high risk of devastation.

A potential tropical cyclone named Shakti is brewing over the Bay of Bengal, with forecasts predicting landfall between May 24 and 26. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department and independent weather experts have raised early warnings, urging precautionary measures for vulnerable coastal regions.

Meteorologist Mostofa Kamal Polash shared on social media that the atmospheric conditions over the Bay are increasingly favorable for cyclone formation. The system, though yet to fully develop, is expected to intensify rapidly from a circulation to a deep depression before forming into a named cyclone. The name Shakti—proposed by Sri Lanka—has been assigned in anticipation.

According to forecasts, the likely impact zone stretches from Odisha in eastern India to Chattogram in southeastern Bangladesh. However, Bangladesh’s Khulna division and India’s West Bengal coastline are currently identified as the most at-risk areas. If the cyclone tracks toward Bangladesh, strong winds, heavy rainfall, and tidal surges could endanger lives and property in low-lying areas.

The Bangladesh Weather Observation Team (BWOT) earlier projected a cyclonic circulation to develop between May 16 and 18. This system may evolve through multiple stages, eventually becoming a full-fledged cyclone in the third week of May.

While the official meteorological department has not yet issued a formal cyclone warning, authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Emergency response teams, local administrations, and disaster management departments have been advised to stay on alert and initiate preparatory actions.

Experts urge coastal residents to remain vigilant, particularly fishermen and trawler operators, who are advised to dock their vessels in safe zones immediately. Communities are also encouraged to prepare mentally for possible evacuation to cyclone shelters.

BWOT further recommended avoiding deep-sea travel during the third week of May and following official weather updates closely. They stressed the importance of real-time communication with meteorological authorities to ensure timely action.
