Amid sweltering heat, heavy rain lashed Kurigram, Mymensingh, and Moulvibazar on Monday, while meteorologists warn of a possible cyclone—‘Shakti’—brewing in the Bay of Bengal between May 23 and 28.
Several parts of Bangladesh, including Dhaka, experienced light to moderate rain or overcast skies, bringing temporary relief from intense heat. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department forecasts more rain across Dhaka, Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Sylhet divisions, with rain gradually spreading south and east. Sporadic drizzle is also likely.
On Sunday, parts of Jamalpur, Netrokona, Sherpur, and Mymensingh were hit by severe nor’westers and lightning, resulting in 10 fatalities across four districts. Dhaka’s sky turned cloudy by afternoon.
According to weather expert Mostofa Kamal Polash from Canada’s University of Saskatchewan, a cyclonic system is highly likely to form over the Bay of Bengal between May 23 and 28. The cyclone, to be named ‘Shakti’ (proposed by Sri Lanka), may strike land between India’s Odisha coast and Bangladesh’s Chattogram coast, with higher chances over West Bengal and Khulna between May 24 and 26.
The Bangladesh Weather Observation Team (BWOT) added that a system may begin forming between May 16 and 18, gradually intensifying into a depression and possibly a cyclone. If it heads toward Bangladesh, strong winds, heavy rain, and storm surges may impact coastal areas.
Meanwhile, a mild to intense heatwave continues in 63 districts except Sylhet, with Chuadanga recording the highest temperature at 41.8°C. Dhaka endured its hottest day of the year at 39.9°C.
