The High Court has upheld the death sentence for 20 individuals convicted in the 2019 murder of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad, while also maintaining life sentences for five others.
The High Court’s ruling came after hearing the death reference and appeals from the accused. A bench consisting of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain delivered the verdict.
Abrar Fahad, a second-year student at BUET, was brutally beaten to death by a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists on the night of October 7, 2019. His father filed a case, leading to the conviction of 20 BUET students in December 2021, who were sentenced to death. Five others received life sentences.
The case was referred to the High Court for approval of the death sentence. The prisoners appealed the decision, and after a lengthy process, the case was heard in November 2023. Following the hearing, the case was kept pending until today’s ruling.
Liberty News’ court correspondent states that the court’s decision ensures that the original convictions for the heinous crime remain intact, marking a significant chapter in the ongoing legal proceedings for justice in the case.
