A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is crossing the West Bengal–Bangladesh coast, prompting authorities to issue warning signal number three for all maritime ports and suspend inland water transport services in several regions.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) reported Thursday that a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression and is currently making landfall near Sagar Island and Khepupara.
According to a special BMD bulletin, the system is generating squally to gale-force winds, with speeds reaching up to 60 km/h near its center. The sea remains very rough, and heavy rainfall is expected across large parts of the country today and tomorrow.
Due to the depression coinciding with the new moon, tidal surges 2 to 4 feet above normal may inundate low-lying areas and coastal districts, including Chattogram, Noakhali, Bhola, Barishal, Khulna, and surrounding islands.
Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra ports have all been advised to hoist local warning signal number three. Additionally, river ports in Dhaka, Faridpur, Madaripur, and several other districts are under warning signal number two, with the threat of gusty winds up to 80 km/h.
The depression, initially formed as a low-pressure area on Tuesday, has gradually intensified over the past two days. As of noon Thursday, it was located 375 km southwest of Chattogram Port and 170 km from Mongla.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast for Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions. The BMD also warned of possible landslides in hilly districts like Rangamati, Bandarban, and Cox’s Bazar.
In response to deteriorating weather, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has suspended all launch services on the Daulatdia–Paturia route and from Barishal River Port. Ferry services, however, continue to operate.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre has issued alerts for rising river levels in northern, northeastern, and eastern regions. Rainfall is expected to decrease from Saturday, particularly in Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions.
Fishing boats and trawlers in the northern Bay have been advised to remain anchored until further notice.
