Delaying elections will deepen crisis : Amir Khasru

BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has warned that delaying Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary elections will only intensify the ongoing crisis.

Speaking at a seminar titled “Reforms and Elections: Context of National Unity” held at the BIISS auditorium in Dhaka’s Ramna on Saturday, Khasru said, “History proves that countries which quickly returned to democracy after a popular uprising fared better. In contrast, those that delayed elections by raising various arguments faced civil war, social division, and economic disaster.”

Expressing concern over the current situation, he noted, “Even after 14 months, we are still engaged in debates. Yet, our neighbour Nepal announced election dates within a similar period. Fourteen months later, Bangladesh has again turned into a country without representation.”

He stressed that people want a representative parliament and an elected, accountable government, adding that a change in direction is crucial.

On the issue of reforms and national unity, Khasru questioned, “Why are we dragging on debates about proportional representation (PR)? Why are we constantly confusing and dividing the nation?”

Referring to BNP’s proposed reforms, he said, “The simplest way forward is the 31-point reform agenda presented by BNP. We have taken it to the people, and we will continue to do so. But if we go beyond that into endless exercises, we must consider whether we are doing more harm than good—whether we are creating unnecessary division in the nation.”
