Bangladesh recorded 234 new dengue cases in the 24 hours leading up to Sunday morning (16 June), raising the total number of confirmed infections this year to 6,222, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Of the newly infected, 43 patients were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka, while the remaining cases were reported from outside the capital. Currently, 703 dengue patients are undergoing treatment at hospitals nationwide.
No new deaths were reported during this period, keeping the year’s total fatalities at 30.
Barishal Division reported the highest number of new cases with 119, followed by Chattogram with 29 and Dhaka Division (excluding city corporation areas) with 32. Within Dhaka city, Dhaka South City Corporation reported 28 cases and Dhaka North City Corporation 15.
Meanwhile, Mymensingh, Rajshahi, and Khulna divisions reported a handful of new cases. The DGHS noted that last year the country recorded 101,214 dengue infections and 575 deaths, making it the deadliest year on record for the mosquito-borne disease.
