Bangladesh has sought support from member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for its candidacy in the Category C council elections for the 2026–27 term.

Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain, adviser to the Ministry of Shipping and the Ministry of Labour and Employment, made the appeal on Wednesday while briefing diplomats at a hotel in Dhaka ahead of the election scheduled for December, said a press release.

Highlighting Bangladesh as one of the world’s leading maritime nations, the shipping adviser noted the presence of three operational seaports and a deep-sea port under construction at Matarbari.

He said two-thirds of the population depend on the maritime sector, while Bangladeshi-built ships are being exported abroad and Bangladeshi seafarers, including women, are earning global recognition for their skills.

He invited foreign trainees to study at Bangladesh’s internationally certified marine academies.

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain emphasised Bangladesh’s strategic location in the Indo-Pacific region and its commitment to transforming the maritime sector into a safe, environmentally friendly, and inclusive industry.

He urged diplomats to support Bangladesh’s candidacy, citing the country’s leadership in ship recycling and contributions to maritime trade security.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to the UK and Permanent Representative to the IMO, Abida Islam, said the country has previously served as an IMO Council member and played a significant role in global maritime policymaking.

If elected again, Bangladesh would continue to advance safe sea transport and intercontinental maritime trade, she added.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Shipping reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to environmental protection, digitalisation, and implementation of IMO conventions.

Diplomats from various countries attended the briefing alongside Chief Adviser’s Special Envoy on International Affairs Lutfe Siddique and Chief Secretary M Siraj Uddin Miah.
