The trial of the gruesome massacre will take place in Dhaka Central Jail instead of the previously selected Alia Madrasa.

A notification was published by the law ministry regarding this matter on Sunday.

“The BDR carnage case will be heard in the temporary court at Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj, rather than the temporary court set up in the field next to the government Alia Madrasa and Dhaka Central Jail in the Bakshi Bazar area of Dhaka” was stated in the law ministry’s notification.

In a bizzare manner, the previously selected makeshift courtroom was set on fire earlier this week in the Alia Madrasa compound by unknown miscreants. Apart from this, Liberty News’ Dhaka South correspondent observed that protests also took place on Thursday by opposing students of Alia Madrasa who did not want the makeshift court to hold its’ proceedings in their institution for the fact that they want full-time access to the playrgound that was adjoined to the presently burnt courtroom.

The Bangladesh Rifles Massacre took place on 25 and 26 February 2009 which left 74 killed, including 57 army officers. The massacre was one of the bloodiest since Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan in 1971 and foreign involvement is strongly speculated.
