A Dhaka court has dismissed a case filed by a young woman against her parents under the Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Act, following a settlement between the parties.

Metropolitan Magistrate MA Azharul Islam passed the order on Thursday after a hearing.

Confirming the matter, the complainant’s lawyer Somaiyad Shahriar Fida said the court dismissed the case and directed that the matter be resolved amicably within the family. “The complainant—the daughter—agreed to the settlement. Her parents have shown considerable compassion. We are hopeful for a peaceful resolution,” the lawyer added.

Earlier, on 22 June, Mehrein Ahmed, 19, had filed the case against her father Nasir Ahmed and mother Jannatul Ferdous before the same court. That day, the court recorded her statement and issued summonses for both parents to appear in court.

According to the case statement, on the evening of 25 May this year, Mehrein was physically assaulted and verbally abused by her parents at their residence in the capital’s Mohammadpur area. She alleged that despite being an adult, her parents continuously interfered with her personal freedom, insulted and mistreated her, and restricted her access to daily household items.

She further claimed that she was being denied her rightful share of family resources and subjected to regular verbal abuse, humiliation, intimidation, and offensive language, causing her severe mental distress. Besides, she accused her parents of inflicting physical harm, constituting domestic violence.
