Battery-run e-rickshaws are set to be introduced on a pilot basis in Dhaka’s three areas – Uttara, Dhanmondi, and Paltan – starting this August.
“The authorities have planned to expand the service to other parts of the capital in phases,” Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Mohammad Azaz said while addressing a programme at the DNCC auditorium on Saturday.
He said the e-rickshaws will operate alongside existing rickshaws and those will be phased out gradually.
The event marked the inauguration of a training programme, organised by the DNCC, for drivers of these e-rickshaws, developed by Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain inaugurated the training programme as the chief guest.
He said, “Our rickshaw-puller brothers played a vital role in the July mass uprising. Once they are brought under a licensing system through proper registration and training, no one will be able to label them as illegal. They will be able to ply the vehicles with full civic dignity.”
Azaz said, “The BUET-designed e-rickshaws will hit the city streets in August. We have prioritised safety above all in the design of this vehicle. As trained drivers will get licences, this system will pave the way for a more effective road safety structure in the city.”
