Following the murder of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Samyo, university authorities and the Suhrawardy Udyan administration have taken swift steps to enhance public safety and restore order in the area.
In response to the killing of Shahriar Alam Samyo, a student of Dhaka University (DU), the DU administration and the authorities responsible for Suhrawardy Udyan held a joint meeting and announced a series of decisive actions to ensure security and prevent further incidents.
Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Adviser to the Ministries of Local Government, Rural Development, Cooperatives, and Youth and Sports, outlined the measures in a verified Facebook post on Wednesday. These include permanently closing the gate behind the Raju Sculpture, removing illegal vendors, and cracking down on drug activities.
A coordinated operation involving the Public Works Department, Dhaka South City Corporation, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), and the Department of Narcotics Control will be launched. A dedicated monitoring committee will also be formed to oversee regular enforcement.
To improve safety, the park will be equipped with adequate lighting and CCTV surveillance. A dedicated police box will be installed, and Suhrawardy Udyan will follow a structured management model similar to Ramna Park. Public entry will be restricted after 8 PM.
Authorities have already arrested three suspects in connection with Samyo’s murder. The government assures that the investigation is ongoing and that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
