Lipton Islam, the Deputy Secretary of Drama Affairs of the banned Dhaka University unit of Chhatra League, was detained by Shahbagh police on Wednesday evening from the TSC building at Dhaka University.
Lipton, a student of the Institute of Education and Research (2015-16 session) and a resident of Master Da Surja Sen Hall, was first taken to the proctor’s office by fellow students before being handed over to the police with the help of the proctorial body. He was appointed as the Deputy Secretary of Drama Affairs in the banned Chhatra League committee on February 19, 2024, and also served as the President of the Dhaka University Drama Society (DUDS) for the 2022-23 academic year.
Officer-in-Charge of Shahbagh Police Station, Md. Khalid Monsur, confirmed that they are in the process of filing a case against him. He stated, “With the help of the proctorial body, students handed over the Chhatra League leader to us. We are now working on filing a case with the Detective Branch (DB).”
Ryan Ferdous, a Pharmacy Department student (2021-22 session), claimed that Lipton was seen at the TSC Drama Society room, allegedly with the help of Drama Society’s General Secretary Safin Uz Zaman. Ryan added, “He was directly involved in attacking students during the July movement.”
Liberty News’ campus correspondent states that associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, Proctor of Dhaka University, confirmed the detention and stated that Lipton had prior charges against him. The university’s fact-finding committee’s report is due on February 20, after which the administration will take swift action against those involved in the attacks on students.
