The Dhaka University (DU) administration is drafting a policy to formally ban student politics in residential halls and academic areas after fresh protests erupted over the announcement of 593-member hall committees by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.

Students launched an all-night “No Hall Politics” movement on Saturday, accusing hall-based politically aligned committees of fostering violence and disrupting the academic environment.

Protesters issued six demands, including the abolition of existing political committees, cancellation of seats held by activists, an apology from the Chhatra Dal leadership, eradication of open and covert politics, timely DUCSU elections, and enforcement of a previous ban issued on 17 July 2024.

The administration has held a series of meetings with the Provost Standing Committee and 23 student organizations over the past two days. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan said the policy will be developed “step by step” to ensure a peaceful environment ahead of DUCSU election.

He remarked, “the new policy will be finalized soon after consulting all stakeholders.”
