DMP Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sajjad Ali has announced that wearing masks will not be allowed during the Shobhajatra procession on Pahela Baishakh, as part of heightened security measures.

During a press conference on Sunday (April 13), the DMP Commissioner stated that extensive preparations have been made at all celebration venues in Dhaka for the Bengali New Year. The festivities are expected to be more vibrant and secure this year, with drone surveillance, dog squads, and increased deployment of police forces.

Commissioner Sajjad Ali emphasized, “Participants must not wear masks at the Shobhajatra. Noise-polluting items like whistles are also prohibited.” He urged women and children to attend events like the Chhayanaut program with caution, avoiding crowded areas when possible.

Meanwhile, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Director General AKM Shahidur Rahman confirmed that security arrangements have been enforced nationwide in coordination with various agencies. Speaking from a security briefing at Ramna Batamul, he said, “We’ve taken every step to ensure the New Year celebrations pass peacefully.”

RAB has also strengthened cyber monitoring to prevent misinformation campaigns targeting the Baishakhi festivities.

Regarding the recent burning of a fascist effigy at Charukala, the RAB DG mentioned that an investigation is underway to determine if there was any lapse in security. “Action will be taken against those responsible if negligence is found,” he added.
