Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has issued strict guidelines to stop vehicles from traveling on wrong paths and rickshaws from operating on unauthorized roads, warning of legal action against violators.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has announced stern measures to halt the growing issue of vehicles, especially rickshaws and battery-operated rickshaws, using wrong lanes and operating on roads where they are not permitted. The directive, signed by DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali, was published on Sunday in a public notice.

The notice highlights that it is a common sight in Dhaka for rickshaws to travel against traffic flow, especially on major roads where buses ply, and where rickshaws are not allowed. Passengers often encourage rickshaw drivers to take unauthorized routes, disrupting the normal flow of traffic, causing congestion, and increasing the risk of severe accidents.

The notice also addressed the issue of motorcycles and CNG-driven auto-rickshaws using wrong lanes, further aggravating road conditions. DMP’s action aims to eliminate the practice of both private and government vehicles, along with professional drivers, using wrong routes or parking illegally, which increases traffic jams and causes further road safety hazards.

The public advisory urges all rickshaw passengers, rickshaw drivers, motorcyclists, and government vehicle operators to comply with traffic rules. It also warned against provoking drivers to take unauthorized routes or engage in altercations with traffic police, noting that violators will face criminal charges.

Liberty News’ national correspondent states that, DMP concluded by appealing for public cooperation to ensure better traffic management and road safety in the capital. The police force emphasized that enforcement of the law would be intensified to curb traffic violations.
