BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is physically and mentally stable after receiving medical treatment in London, according to her personal physician, Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain.
At a press briefing in front of her Gulshan residence “Firoza” on Tuesday (May 6), Dr. Zahid said, “Madam has returned from London in relatively good physical and mental health. Though the 14-hour journey has made her slightly fatigued, her mental condition remains stable.”
Khaleda Zia arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 10:40 AM via a royal air ambulance provided free of charge by Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. It took over two hours for her motorcade to reach her residence due to heavy crowds of supporters lining the road. Law enforcement eventually had to change her travel route for security reasons, and she arrived home around 1:30 PM.
Dr. Zahid expressed gratitude to the Emir of Qatar, the interim government, foreign ministry, and other agencies for facilitating her treatment. He added that she had been under the supervision of Professor Patrick Kennedy and Professor Jennifer Cross at London Clinic, where she spent 17 days hospitalized before staying with her son, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
The 79-year-old former Prime Minister had been suffering from liver cirrhosis, kidney, heart, diabetes, and arthritis issues before flying to London on January 7 in a royal air ambulance.
Dr. Zahid praised Tarique Rahman’s family—especially Khaleda’s three granddaughters Zayma, Zafia, and Zahiya—for helping her recover emotionally during her stay. He also thanked expatriate BNP leaders from the UK and around the world, as well as the Bangladeshi public for their prayers.
BNP leaders, including senior doctors, politicians, and activists, were present at the press conference to welcome her return and express their gratitude to all who contributed to her recovery.
