A viral photo showing Assistant Director of the Narcotics Control Department in Pirojpur, Mohammad Babul Sorkar, indulging in drug use with a woman has sparked outrage, with authorities launching an investigation.
A photo of Mohammad Babul Sorkar, Assistant Director of the Narcotics Control Department in Pirojpur, surfaced on social media on March 11, showing him in an intimate setting with a woman, consuming a narcotic substance through two pipes. The image has quickly gone viral, drawing heavy criticism across local Facebook groups in Pirojpur. Many users have expressed outrage, with comments such as “The protector has become the destroyer” and “The camel’s back is broken.”
Local sources reveal that Sorkar previously served as the general secretary of the Bangladesh Awami League’s student wing, Chhatra League, and has exerted influence within various departments using his political background.
Efforts to contact Sorkar for a comment were unsuccessful, with repeated calls to his mobile phone being unanswered and no trace of him found at his office. Additionally, Pirojpur’s Narcotics Control Department has refused to comment on the matter.
The Division Director of the Narcotics Control Department in Barishal, Mohammad Tanveer Hossain Khan, was also unavailable for comment.
Moniruzzaman Nasim Ali, president of the Pirojpur branch of the citizens’ rights group Sushasoner Jonno Nagorik (SUJAN), stated, “If the allegations are true, Sorkar should be immediately dismissed from his position.”
Pirojpur’s District Commissioner, Mohammad Ashraful Alam Khan, confirmed that he had heard about the incident but had not seen the photo. He assured that appropriate action would be taken based on the investigation and in accordance with service rules.
The Director-General of the Narcotics Control Department, Mohammad Hasan Maruf, told Liberty News’ local correspondent that an investigation into the matter is underway and that details will be shared once the inquiry is completed.
