Shahriar Alam Samyo, a prominent student leader of JCD from Dhaka University’s Sir AF Rahman Hall, was fatally stabbed near Suhrawardy Udyan on Tuesday midnight. The killing has sparked outrage on campus as students demand justice and the VC’s resignation.
Shahriar Alam Samyo, a student of the Institute of Education and Research (2018-19 session) and literature secretary of JCD’s Sir AF Rahman Hall unit, was stabbed to death near Suhrawardy Udyan early Tuesday night. The incident reportedly began with an altercation over a minor accident involving a motorbike, leading to a violent attack.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest of three suspects — Tamim Hawlader, Polash Sardar, and Samrat Mallik — from different areas, including Rajabazar. They were allegedly injured during the scuffle and were later detained from a clinic while seeking treatment. Police are still searching for other culprits involved.
Earlier, Shahriar’s brother filed a case at Shahbagh Police Station, accusing 10 to 12 unidentified persons of involvement in the murder.
Samyo’s death has triggered protests across the DU campus. JCD leaders and activists marched to the VC’s residence demanding justice and campus safety. Chants like “We want justice” and “Why did our brother die?” echoed as leaders including JCD President Rakibul Islam Rakib and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir led the protest.
Samyo was known for his dedication during past movements, including the July–August protests. He hailed from Ullapara, Sirajganj.
