Students of Dhaka University (DU) staged a protest march on Friday evening condemning the brutal murder of a businessman in Mitford by a Jubo Dal leader, allegedly over extortion demands.
The demonstration also protested what they termed as widespread extortion and acts of terror by the BNP across the country.
The protest began around 7:30pm in the university’s residential hall area.
Protesting students alleged that Jubo Dal activists had brutally murdered businessman Shohag by smashing his head with stones over extortion money. They claimed the perpetrators danced atop the victim’s body after the killing. The students vowed that the people and student community of Bangladesh would never forgive such killers.
DU student AB Zubayer said, “Since 5 August, we have been trying to rebuild the country. Only one party stands as a barrier to this process. Shohag was murdered two days ago; today the video surfaced. The nationalist extortionist party murdered a businessman just because he refused to pay money. Are we returning to the Stone Age?”
He added, “BNP leaders and activists are extorting, raping, and killing across the country. Bangladesh has turned into a sanctuary for extortionists. After each killing, a call comes from London: ‘Sister, this is Tarique speaking.’”
Addressing Tarique Rahman, Zubayer warned: “Control your party. Don’t follow the path of the Awami League. If you do, your fate will be the same as theirs.”
President of the Bangladesh Chhatra Adhikar Parishad, Bin Yamin Molla, stated: “Just as students are protesting today over Shohag’s murder, they also protested during the Awami League’s rule. BNP is failing to control its own party members.”
“We demand justice for these extortionist criminals. In the past ten months, BNP has killed 100 people. We demand justice for every murder,” he said, further adding that elections must not be held without reforms.
