The Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) has expressed grave concern over the recent rape allegations in Khagrachari and the subsequent violent unrest.
In a statement issued on Wednesday (1 October), DUCSU General Secretary SM Farhad said the case has created deep confusion due to contradictory evidence.
According to the complaint, a local youth, Shayan Shil, was accused of raping a teenage girl and was swiftly arrested. However, CCTV footage from Khagrachari market appeared to show Shil walking freely at the time of the alleged incident. Further doubt was cast by the medical report of Dr. Jaya Chakma, head of the investigating medical board, who noted that the girl bore no signs of physical injury and had not been raped. All ten clinical indicators were recorded as normal.
DUCSU stressed that if the allegations are proven with clear evidence, the perpetrator must face exemplary punishment. But if the case was fabricated, those responsible for engineering such falsehoods must be held accountable for destabilizing the region.
The student leaders criticized the response to the allegations, saying that legal procedures were ignored in favour of violent actions. They condemned organized blockades, assaults on ambulances, looting and vandalism of shops, arson of houses, and the harassment of tourists. The unrest has already left three people—Athui Marma, Athrau Marma, and Taiching Marma—dead, while several law enforcement officers sustained serious injuries.
DUCSU expressed strong condemnation of the killings, extended condolences to the bereaved families, and demanded justice through proper investigation and punishment of those responsible.
