In a bid to better facilitate expatriates’ participation in the upcoming national elections, Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Mohammad Sanaaullah has recommended introducing proxy voting for expatriates.
On Tuesday morning, during a press conference at the Election Commission office, Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Mohammad Sanaaullah revealed that the current postal ballot system for expatriates is ineffective, as no votes have been cast from abroad through this method.
He emphasized that in order to meet the expectations and demands of expatriates, the Election Commission is considering moving towards a proxy voting system. “This system exists in several countries and is the only way to allow expatriates to cast their votes in real-time,” said Sanaaullah.
The Election Commissioner also mentioned that a workshop will be held to discuss the proxy voting system with various stakeholders. “We will consult political parties and other relevant entities, and by April 15, we will know how much time will be needed to develop this system,” he added.
Liberty News’ political correspondent states that Sanaaullah further stated that, should all parties agree, changes to current laws would be necessary to implement the system. Under the proposed system, expatriates would be able to choose a proxy who would vote on their behalf.
