Economic Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed reassured that the high tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on imports will not have a significant impact on Bangladesh’s exports.
Bangladesh’s Economic Adviser, Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, has stated that the higher tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on imports will not substantially affect the country’s exports. Speaking to the press on Sunday (April 6) after the Eid holidays, he assured that the government was taking measures to mitigate any potential negative impact.
Dr. Ahmed explained that efforts were underway to reduce the trade deficit through increased imports and ongoing discussions with the US to lower tariffs and duties on products imported from the country. He emphasized that the impact of the new tariffs would be manageable, and there was no need for excessive concern. The government is also reviewing the new tariff policy to ensure it does not harm Bangladesh’s interests.
In addition, Dr. Ahmed revealed that steps were being taken to reduce reliance on a single market for the country’s garment exports. He also highlighted that during Ramadan and Eid, prices of essential goods were relatively low, providing relief to consumers. This success was attributed to collaborative efforts by all ministries, and Dr. Ahmed noted that the overall economic condition of the country is improving.
