Students of Eden College held a protest rally demanding the assurance of safety for women, children, and all citizens, in response to the increasing incidents of sexual harassment and violence against women.
On Sunday, February 23, the students organized the event at the Bakultala area of Eden College. During the rally, the students were seen chanting various slogans to voice their demand for justice and safety.
At the rally, speakers expressed their concern over the increasing incidents of sexual violence and sexual harassment across the country. They emphasized the need for collective action from the state, society, and individuals to ensure that women can live their lives safely and with dignity. The speakers stressed their desire for a new Bangladesh where no one would be subjected to sexual harassment. They called on brothers and sisters to unite, take to the streets, and build the nation together.
One of the students, Tanzila Bonna, shared her concern, stating that incidents of sexual harassment and violence against women are rising at an alarming rate in various parts of the country. She highlighted that this reflects moral decay in society, the lax enforcement of laws, a lack of women’s safety. She pointed out that perpetrators are not facing punishment, which is only increasing the crime rate.
Another student, Rubayet Jannat, expressed that many women are at risk due to the lack of adequate safety measures. She also highlighted the growing trend of online harassment, which eventually escalates into more severe crimes. She pointed out that in the new Bangladesh, women continue to face abuse both at home and in public spaces. While the legal and home affairs advisers sit in their chairs, they remain ineffective when it comes to taking action. “That’s why we’ve taken to the streets. The government must take immediate, effective steps to be accountable,” she stated.
In addition, protests and rallies on the same issue were held at Dhaka College, Government Titumir College, several other educational institutions.
