The Editors’ Council has expressed deep concern over a newly added clause in the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance 2025.
On Tuesday, Editors’ Council President Mahfuz Anam and General Secretary Dewan Hanif Mahmud expressed the concern in a statement.
In the statement, they said, “On May 12, the activities of the Awami League were banned. Earlier, on May 11, the interim government published the gazette of the ‘Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance 2025’. The gazette published shows that a clause has been added to the ordinance. Clause (e) of sub-section (1) of section 20 (b) of Act No. 16 of 2009 states, ‘The publication or printing of any press statement by or on behalf of or in support of the said entity or any kind of campaigning or organizing processions, meetings or press conferences or delivering public speeches in the media, online, social media or any other medium shall be prohibited.”
They further said, “The application of the new clause of the ordinance may limit the scope of the free expression of opinion and the right of the media to the people of the country which is worrying and will create concerns in terms of freedom of expression. The addition of such a clause to the ordinance is not desirable from the interim government as there is scope for misuse.”
The council demanded that the clause be suspended and reconsidered.
