Ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, the Election Commission (EC) is increasing the number of electoral symbols for candidates from 69 to 115.

The EC Secretariat will soon issue a gazette notification in this regard.

To that end, the final draft of the amended Election Conduct Rules has been sent to the relevant ministry for vetting.

With the upcoming election in mind, over a hundred new political parties have applied for registration. Traditionally, the EC allocates electoral symbols to parties from its approved list. If a party receives registration, a symbol is reserved for it accordingly.

This time, two symbols that were subjects of discussion – the Shapla (water lily) and Doel (magpie robin) – have not been included in the list.

Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmel Masud said, “This time, around 115 electoral symbols have been finalised. The related rules have been sent to the ministry. However, we have made a policy decision not to include Shapla as a symbol.”

In the last parliamentary election in 2008, 140 symbols were allocated. Later, separate symbols were designated for parliamentary and local government elections.

In 2017, when the rules for conducting parliamentary elections were amended, the number of symbols was reduced by half.

Currently, the Rules for Conducting National Parliamentary Elections provide 69 symbols in total for both party-affiliated and independent candidates.

On Wednesday, EC Additional Secretary KM Ali Newaz said that the amended rules, including the new symbol list, have been sent to the Ministry of Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs.
