The government has announced that electricity prices will remain unchanged in the upcoming 2025–26 fiscal year, offering relief to households and businesses amid broader economic adjustments.

While presenting the national budget on Monday, Economic Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed confirmed that there will be no increase in electricity tariffs in FY2025–26. The announcement came during his speech in Parliament, following the approval of a proposed Tk 7,89,999 crore budget at a special meeting held earlier at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Tejgaon.

“In the upcoming budget, electricity prices will remain unchanged,” Dr. Ahmed stated. “We are taking steps to reduce production costs and reassessing existing power generation agreements to improve efficiency.”

The move is expected to provide financial stability for consumers amid inflationary pressures. The decision also signals the interim government’s intent to maintain essential utility prices while pursuing fiscal reforms in other areas.

Alongside the electricity announcement, the proposed budget includes changes to the country’s minimum income tax structure. Beginning from the 2026–27 assessment year, a flat Tk 5,000 minimum tax will apply to all individual taxpayers exceeding the tax-free threshold, regardless of geographic location. However, to encourage tax compliance among newcomers, first-time filers will be eligible for a significantly lower minimum tax of Tk 1,000 starting in FY2025–26.

These measures are part of a broader fiscal strategy by the interim government, led by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, to balance growth with equity and expand the tax base without burdening the public with increased utility costs.
