Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser, has emphasized that protecting elephants depends on safeguarding their natural habitats. Speaking on Wednesday at a discussion marking World Elephant Day 2025 at the Forest Department headquarters (Bon Bhaban), she outlined several urgent measures for elephant conservation.
Rizwana highlighted the need to plant elephant-friendly trees, identify and preserve elephant corridors, conduct population surveys, and reduce human-elephant conflicts. She also stressed the importance of controlling captive elephants, raising awareness among rural communities, and ensuring sustainable habitats.
A special conservation project has been launched, under which 350 hectares of elephant food plantations and 50 hectares of bamboo groves will be established with proper protection. To mitigate human-elephant conflicts, ecological boundary bio-fencing will be set up, including 10 kilometers of live thorny fencing using plants such as cane, lemon, and jujube.
Additionally, Anti-Depredation Squads (ADS), Elephant Response Teams (ERT), and Elephant Rescue Teams (ERT) will be deployed near Elephant Reserves. Sixteen tree towers will be built to monitor movements, while two rescue centres will open at Gazipur Safari Park and Dulahazara Safari Park in Cox’s Bazar. Temporary shelters will also be constructed in Sylhet, Chattogram, Rangamati, and Sherpur for treating injured elephants.
The project will assess human-elephant conflicts in relation to anthropogenic impacts and climate change, conduct ethnographic surveys, and establish a ten-acre elephant sanctuary at Chunati in Chattogram for rehabilitating domesticated elephants.
The event was presided over by Md Amir Hosain Chowdhury, Chief Conservator of Forests. Special guests included Md Khayrul Hasan (Additional Secretary, Ministry of Environment), Dr Mohammad Ali Reza Khan (former principal wildlife specialist, Dubai Safari Park), Professor Dr Md Monirul H Khan (Jahangirnagar University), ASM Zahir Uddin Akon (Forest Department), and Dr Mohammad Abdul Motaleb (Arannayk Foundation). Md Shanaullah Patwary delivered a thematic presentation on wildlife conservation.
