Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and a former ally of US President Donald Trump, announced on Saturday that he has launched a new political party in the United States to challenge what he described as the country’s entrenched “one-party system.”
The tech billionaire, who was one of Trump’s biggest donors during the 2024 election, fell out with the president after leading the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) — a controversial initiative to slash spending and downsize the federal workforce, reports NDTV.
Musk has repeatedly criticised Trump’s massive domestic spending plan, warning it would balloon US debt to dangerous levels. He has also vowed to oppose any lawmaker who supported the spending bill.
In a post on X, the social media platform he owns, the SpaceX and Tesla CEO said: “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
On Friday, the US Independence Day, Musk posted a poll asking his 187 million followers if they wanted independence from the two-party — or as he called it, “uniparty” — system that has dominated American politics for nearly two centuries. More than 1.2 million people responded, with the “Yes” vote outnumbering “No” by two to one.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party — and you shall have it!” Musk declared, sharing a meme of a two-headed snake labelled “End the Uniparty.”
Political analysts say it remains unclear how serious Musk’s bid is or how much traction it could gain in America’s polarised landscape.
