Energy and Mineral Resources Advisor Fawzul Kabir Khan has warned that power supply will be disconnected if air conditioners are set below 25°C, aiming to curb the growing electricity demand.

During a press briefing on Monday, February 17, at the Osmany Hall on the occasion of the District Commissioner’s Conference, Energy and Mineral Resources Advisor Fawzul Kabir Khan issued a stern warning regarding electricity usage. He emphasized that power cuts will be implemented in areas where air conditioners are operated below 25°C.

Khan explained that a dedicated team from the Power Division will monitor compliance, and in case of any deviation from the directive, load-shedding will be enforced in the concerned areas. He highlighted the financial challenges the country faces in managing the costs of electricity and fuel, but reassured that measures have been taken to ensure consistent power supply during Ramadan.

The Advisor noted that electricity demand is around 9,000 MW during winter but rises to 17,000-18,000 MW during summer, largely due to irrigation and air conditioning usage. While irrigation is prioritized due to its importance for food production, he urged for more responsible use of air conditioners to save several thousand MW of electricity.

Additionally, Khan mentioned that he has requested religious leaders to direct mosques to maintain air conditioning at 25°C during Taraweeh prayers. This directive will also be enforced in both government and private offices.

Liberty News’ national correspondent states that to ensure compliance, the Energy Department will monitor air conditioning usage, and areas found violating the guidelines will face immediate load-shedding, regardless of whether they are urban or rural.
