Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned that the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict could lead to a surge in migration, posing serious risks for both Europe and the region.

In a phone call with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Friday, Erdogan said Israel’s airstrikes, launched last week over concerns about Iran’s nuclear ambitions, had triggered a dangerous cycle of violence. Iran responded with immediate missile retaliation.

“The spiral of violence triggered by Israel’s attacks could harm the region and Europe in terms of migration and the possibility of nuclear leakage,” Erdogan’s office quoted him as saying.

He emphasized that negotiations, not military confrontation, were the only way to resolve concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme. Erdogan added that the conflict had “raised the threat to regional security to the highest level,” and said Turkey was working to end hostilities.

Despite rising tensions, a Turkish defence ministry source said Thursday that there had been “no increase” in border crossings from Iran. AFP reporters at the Kapikoy crossing near Van observed several hundred people crossing in both directions, with customs officials describing the flow as “nothing unusual.”

Defence Minister Yasar Guler, during a border visit on Wednesday, confirmed that Turkey had tightened security along its eastern frontier.
