An 11-month-old pet lion escaped from a house in Lahore, Pakistan, and attacked a woman and her two children on a busy street, police said on Friday (4 July).
CCTV footage showed the lion leaping over a boundary wall and pouncing on a woman carrying groceries on Thursday night. The animal knocked her to the ground, then turned on her two children—aged five and seven—clawing their arms and faces. All three were injured and taken to the hospital, but are not in critical condition.
According to the father, the pet’s owners were “amused” by the attack. They initially fled with the lion but were arrested within 12 hours. The lion has since been confiscated and moved to a wildlife park, where it is reportedly in good health.
Keeping lions as pets is common among the wealthy in Punjab, but a December 2024 incident, where another escaped lion was shot dead, led to stricter laws. Under the new rules, big cats are banned from residential areas and require licenses, while breeders must meet size and fee requirements.
