A Dhaka court has granted a three-day remand for former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal in connection with a sedition case filed at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. The remand request was submitted by investigating officer and Sub-Inspector Shamsuzzoha Sarkar on Thursday, and after a hearing, the Metropolitan Magistrate approved the remand.

The case, filed by BNP on June 22, accuses Awal, along with former CECs Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad (2014) and KM Nurul Huda (2018), of bypassing their constitutional duties and facilitating elections without public participation during the previous Awami League governments. Charges of sedition, fraud, and embezzlement were later added on June 25.

The case also names five former Inspectors General of Police (IGPs) and alleges threats, disappearances, and mass arrests of BNP supporters to suppress opposition during the elections. Authorities believe questioning election officials and law enforcement involved in those polls could reveal critical evidence.
