Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun has admitted to his role in crimes against humanity committed during the July-August uprising and has turned state witness, according to prosecution lawyers.

Standing in the dock of the International Crimes Tribunal, Al-Mamun submitted a written statement acknowledging his involvement and expressed his intention to expose those who orchestrated and participated in the atrocities.

On Thursday (10 July), the International Crimes Tribunal-1 formally framed charges against three individuals—Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun—in connection with crimes against humanity committed during the said period.

The tribunal, led by Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder and comprising members Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury, ordered that the trial proceedings begin officially.

The tribunal also scheduled 3 and 4 August for opening statements and witness hearings by the prosecution.

Of the three accused, Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan are currently absconding, according to court sources.

The case marks a rare instance of a former top police official confessing to involvement in crimes against humanity and cooperating with the court in a high-profile case.
