A Dhaka court on Sunday (16 June) ordered former lawmaker Safia Khatun to be shown arrested in a case related to the attempted murder of a student protester during the July-August mass uprising.
Safia, a former Member of Parliament from Cox’s Bazar-1 and ex-president of the Mahila Awami League, was produced before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah, who passed the order following a police petition. The court later ordered her to be returned to jail.
She was initially detained by police on 30 November last year from the Balughat area under Pallabi Police Station and was shown arrested in the Akram Hossain Rabbi murder case the following day.
The new case involves an attempted murder allegation filed by Soyaib Rahman, who was shot on 4 August while participating in an anti-discrimination student movement in the Mirpur-10 area. Rahman received initial treatment at a nearby hospital and lodged a formal complaint with Mirpur Model Police Station on 1 December 2024.
Safia’s arrest comes amid a broader legal crackdown on political figures in the aftermath of the mass protest movement.
