The High Court on Sunday granted bail to former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in five cases, including one over the killing of garment worker Minarul Islam during the anti-discrimination student and public movement.

The bench of Justice ASM Abdul Mobin and Justice Sagir Hossain delivered the verdict, declaring the earlier rule on her bail as made absolute. Barrister Sara Hossain represented Ivy in the hearing.

Earlier in May, a lower court had rejected Ivy’s bail plea in the case filed over Minarul’s death.

On 20 July last year, during the anti-discrimination student movement in the Adamjee area, garment worker Minarul Islam was shot and later pronounced dead by doctors at the 300-bed Narayanganj Hospital in Khanpur. He was buried the following day in his village.

On 23 September, Minarul’s brother Nazmul Haque filed a murder case with Siddhirganj Police Station, naming 132 individuals including Sheikh Hasina and accusing 300 unidentified others. Ivy was listed as the 12th accused in the case, and she was later implicated in several additional cases.

On 9 May this year, police arrested Ivy from her residence in West Deovog, Narayanganj, in connection with one of the murder cases. The court subsequently ordered her into custody. Later, on 27 May, after a two-day remand in the Minarul murder case, the court sent her back to jail.
