A shocking incident at Rangpur Medical College Hospital has sparked public outrage after a deceased man’s body was discovered with both eyes missing, prompting allegations of organ theft and raising serious questions about morgue security.

The body of Masum Miah, son of Nasim Uddin from Bahardur Singha Jeep Para village in Rangpur city, was sent for autopsy to the morgue at Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RoMC) after his death on Tuesday morning. Masum was reportedly killed in a violent clash over a harvesting dispute with his brother-in-law Saedur. Following his death, police placed the body in the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.

However, on Wednesday morning, when the body was retrieved for the autopsy, Masum’s relatives were horrified to find both his eyes missing. The victim’s family immediately alleged that the eyes had been stolen, demanding justice and accountability from the hospital administration.

“This is beyond belief—how can a corpse’s eyes be stolen inside a government hospital?” said Abdul Jalil, a neighbor of the deceased. “Even the dead are not safe. We want those responsible to be punished.”

Hospital authorities, however, offered a different explanation, claiming that rats may have devoured the eyes during the night. “Rat infestation in the morgue has been an ongoing issue,” confirmed Ward Master Manik Islam. “Such incidents are unfortunately becoming more frequent.”

Officials from the morgue also expressed frustration, saying they had repeatedly warned higher authorities about inadequate security and pest control, but no effective measures had been taken.

Dr. A. A. Akhtaruzzaman, Deputy Director of RoMC, called the incident “deeply regrettable” and assured that a full investigation would be carried out. “Until we complete a proper inquiry, we cannot confirm the exact cause. We have already raised concerns about morgue refrigeration and security, and urgent steps will be taken,” he said.

Meanwhile, Officer-in-Charge of Rangpur Metropolitan Police’s Parshuram Station, Maidul Islam, confirmed that police visited the scene and found the eyes missing. “A formal investigation is underway to determine whether this was due to negligence or criminal intent,” he said.

The case has sparked widespread concern over morgue management in public hospitals, with citizens demanding transparency, accountability, and immediate action to prevent similar incidents in the future.
