A 19-year-old garment worker was allegedly tortured to death inside a factory in Gazipur’s Konabari area after being accused of theft, sparking widespread protests and leading to the temporary closure of the facility.
The victim, Hridoy Hossain, hailed from Ghatail upazila in Tangail and worked as a mechanic in the dyeing section of Greenland Garments, located on Kashimpur Road in Konabari.
According to police and local sources, Hridoy was detained by mechanics and security personnel on Saturday morning on suspicion of theft. He was reportedly tied up and taken to a room inside the factory, where he was brutally tortured. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Initially, factory authorities claimed that an unidentified thief had entered the premises and was injured after falling into a drain. However, Konabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Salahuddin stated, “Upon investigation and reviewing CCTV footage, it became clear that this was a premeditated murder.”
The footage reportedly shows several men tying Hridoy’s hands behind his back and escorting him to a room early Saturday morning. An ambulance was seen arriving at the factory around 10:14 AM and leaving just seven minutes later.
Hospital records at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College confirm that Hridoy was brought in dead. His body showed visible injuries and bruises on his knees, waist, back, wrists, elbows, fingers, neck, and face.
Police have arrested Hasan Mahmud Mithun, a factory worker from Dhanbari upazila in Tangail, in connection with the incident.
Outraged by the alleged murder, hundreds of workers from Greenland Garments and nearby factories staged protests on Sunday, blocking roads and demanding justice. Around 400–500 demonstrators reportedly threw stones at the factory, prompting the deployment of police and army personnel to restore order.
Authorities have since shut down the factory to prevent further unrest.
