BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said in a statement on Sunday, An interim government adviser hailing from Cumilla’s Muradnagar upazila have been abusing power in his locality since taking office last year, in the same manner the ousted Awami League fascist leaders did.

The BNP senior leader made the remark over recent allegations that his party activists were involved in the rape of a Hindu woman in Muradnagar.

Fakhrul did not specifically name the government adviser from Muradnagar, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, as one of those complicit in the crime, nor as one of those working to “falsely tarnish” BNP’s image.

However, the BNP leader did blame the adviser, without naming him, for potentially endangering Muradnagar’s security by focusing on personal gains through territorial power exercises, instead of people’s well-being.

Fakhrul also alleged that a vested group is shifting the blame of the crime on BNP to book political gains, another “usual practice” of Awami Leauge.

He did not provide further details about the group, which he said was working to threaten communal harmony.

Fakhrul blamed the financially solvent “allies” of Awami League for causing the crime and exploiting the fallout to tarnish BNP’s image. He did say who the “allies” were.

Women abusers cannot hold any political identity, Fakhrul said calling for exemplary punishment for those involved in raping the Hindu woman.

On Friday, a Hindu woman from Muradnagar filed a lawsuit alleging one named Fazar Ali raped her the previous day.

On Sunday, Adviser Asif Mahmud published a facebook post claiming a group sheltering “fugitive Awami League fascists” was behind the crime.

He did not mention the group by name, but there have been allegations that some BNP grassroots leaders have been supporting a section of Awami League activists.
