Fakhrul, Abbas and 161 others relieved of charges in two cases

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas, and 161 others have been relieved of charges in two separate cases filed under the Explosive Substances Act with Ramna and Paltan police stations.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sabbir Faiz on Sunday passed the order, accepting the final reports submitted by the police, confirmed by Fakhrul’s lawyer, Jakir Hossain Jewel.

Other accused who were also relieved of charges include Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, Ahmed Azam Khan, Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, Khondaker Enamul Haque Enam, and Aminul Haque.

According to the case filed with Ramna Police Station on 28 October 2023, more than 150,000 people gathered around the BNP central office in Nayapaltan for the party’s grand rally, where incidents of vandalism and arson occurred near the chief justice’s residence. Following the incident, a case was filed against 59 people.

On the same day, vandalism and arson occurred near Paltan Police Station centring the BNP rally. Later, a case was lodged against 104 people.
