BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday reiterated that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is a “liberal democratic party” that aims to bring about political change through a parliamentary election.

Speaking at a discussion titled “Mass Uprising 2024: National Unity and Democratic Journey” held at the China-Bangladesh Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka, Fakhrul emphasised the BNP’s commitment to democratic reforms and national unity. The event was organised to mark the first anniversary of the July–August mass uprising, and to honour victims of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and others who lost their lives in movements over the past 16 years.

“We have to build a democratic Bangladesh,” Fakhrul said, adding that the party’s reform agenda has long been outlined in its Vision 2030. He criticised what he described as a smear campaign in both mainstream and social media, alleging that the BNP is against reforms. “But in reality, the party agrees with almost all of those [reforms],” he added.

He called on the government to publicly clarify which reform proposals the BNP supports or opposes, saying, “It is their responsibility to make that public.”

Fakhrul also reaffirmed that the BNP will not compromise on the principles of democracy and national unity.
