BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday urged all political parties to build mutual understanding and stop the ongoing blame game, warning that persistent mudslinging will deepen divisions and make politics more toxic.
Speaking at a discussion organized by the Jatiya Press Club to mark the first anniversary of the July–August mass uprising, Fakhrul said, “There will always be some harsh words in democracy, but if it goes too far, it only creates bitterness.”
He called on political parties to work together to move the country forward, saying mutual understanding is essential for the people to benefit. “That doesn’t mean every problem will be solved overnight, but at least we can create a path where the people’s voices can reach the government,” he said.
Fakhrul mentioned that political parties have already agreed on 12 core issues and are working through the rest. He urged the National Consensus Commission to focus on the key unresolved matters and aim for an election by mid-February 2025, as discussed between Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman in London.
He also expressed disappointment over the interim government’s failure to assist families affected by the uprising. Fakhrul became emotional while recalling stories of victims, including a child who lost part of his skull to a bullet injury.
“This is the price we’ve paid. And if we fail to honour this sacrifice, it would be a betrayal of our nation,” he said.
The BNP leader also reflected on his own experience in 2014 when he was attacked after leaving the Jatiya Press Club, saying he had accepted the risks as part of the struggle for democracy.
Before the event, Fakhrul inaugurated a photo exhibition documenting 15 years of repression against journalists. The Press Club also honoured senior editors and martyrs’ families, and conferred special recognition on Fakhrul and Standing Committee member AZM Zahid Hossain.
