BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has welcomed the High Court’s decision regarding Ishraque Hossain’s mayoral election as a victory for the people and democracy.

Speaking to journalists from Bangkok via a virtual platform on Thursday, Fakhrul said, “The people have won in this decision. This is undoubtedly another victory for democracy. When the mayoral election was held, the fascist Awami League government forcibly snatched away the result.”

Earlier in the day, the High Court summarily rejected a writ petition that challenged a lower court verdict which had declared BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as the validly elected mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

Fakhrul said Dhaka residents, along with the people across the country, had already declared Ishraque their mayor by showing public support for him on the streets. He urged the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives to take swift steps to officially swear in Ishraque Hossain, avoiding any further delays.

Reiterating BNP’s longstanding demand, Fakhrul called for the immediate announcement of a roadmap for the next parliamentary elections to resolve the ongoing political deadlock.

“The only way to overcome the current political crisis is to announce a roadmap for elections very quickly. There is no room for further negative remarks on this matter,” he stated.

In light of the court ruling, Fakhrul also urged BNP leaders and activists not to block roads or disrupt public life.
