BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has criticised Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami for boycotting the National Consensus Commission meeting held on Tuesday, suggesting the party fears losing political relevance after the upcoming national election.
Speaking at a Dhaka North City Unit BNP programme on Wednesday, Fakhrul said, “Many were not happy with the outcome of the meeting because the election will bring danger for them. As long as there is no election, they hold considerable importance.”
He hinted that Jamaat’s absence stemmed from concerns about its future influence in post-election politics, following recent developments between the BNP and the interim government. Media reports suggest Jamaat skipped the meeting in protest of a joint statement issued from London by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on 13 June. The statement confirmed both sides’ agreement to hold elections in February next year.
Fakhrul described the meeting in London as “rare and historic,” stating it helped resolve tensions over the election timeline and paved the way for a peaceful democratic transition. He praised both leaders for their “statesmanship,” saying they had moved past earlier disagreements to ensure national consensus ahead of Ramadan.
The remarks were made during the launch of the Turag unit’s BNP membership renewal and distribution campaign, held on the premises of Sunbeams School in Dhaka.
