The families of July martyrs and injured demonstrators have occupied the venue of the July Charter 2025 signing ceremony, reiterating their demands for state recognition and legal protection.
The sit-in began early on Friday at the South Plaza of the National Parliament building in Dhaka, hours before the scheduled signing event.
Around 11am, family members of the July martyrs and injured protesters were seen seated on chairs arranged for guests in front of the main stage. A line of police officers positioned themselves between the stage and the protesters. The official signing ceremony is set to take place at 4pm today.
The demonstration followed a protest on Thursday night at Manik Mia Avenue, organised by the united panel of July martyrs’ families and injured protesters. On Friday morning, the demonstrators scaled the parliament gates and entered the premises, eventually reaching the front of the stage. Members of the law enforcement agencies attempted to block their advance but were unsuccessful, as protesters occupied the guest seating area.
The protesters’ two core demands: ensuring fundamental rights and state recognition for the families of July martyrs and July fighters, and enacting and implementing a protection and indemnity law for them. They insist these issues must be incorporated into the July Charter.
